We encountered this beautiful song on Bruce Greene’s album, River in Time. Traditionally sung with add-as-you-go nonsensical lyrics, “Phoebe” existed in the Yancey County area of North Carolina long before Rosie Bennet Ayers performed it for song collector Cecil Sharp in 1918. Greene’s recording also incorporates verses from Francis Ballew, Greene’s neighbor in the South Toe River Valley. We keep the tradition of variation alive with our own eerie and playful take and we hope our changes further emphasize the nonsense of gendered scripts.

Great choice of music, expertly played and sung. Nicely produced. I hope to see The Onlies live, asap. This is an album I listen to over and over. Karamogo

I listen to this when I need music to lift my spirits. This whole album does that. This track is the very best but it all works. Keep doing what you do. oldbanjo61
